Tamil Nadu has taken a decisive step toward cementing its position as a national leader in entrepreneurship and innovation. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M), in collaboration with the state government’s Guidance Tamil Nadu, has launched a state-level dashboard called INNOVATION-TN — a platform designed to spotlight the state’s burgeoning start-up ecosystem.
A Landmark in India’s Innovation Journey
Billed as the first initiative of its kind in the country, INNOVATION-TN brings together start-ups, investors, financial institutions, industries, and policymakers under one digital roof. Far from being a static directory, the dashboard is intended to serve as a strategic tool for economic development—one that provides real-time insights, connects stakeholders, and highlights district-level strengths.
At its core, the dashboard reflects the government’s ambition: not just to make Tamil Nadu an industrial powerhouse, but also to transform it into an epicentre of innovation-driven growth.
Scale of the Ecosystem
The launch comes at a time when Tamil Nadu’s entrepreneurial base is already thriving. As of August 2025:
- Nearly 19,000 start-ups are active in the state.
- They have created over 2.2 lakh jobs.
- Collectively, they’ve attracted investments worth more than INR 1.2 lakh crore.
- 45 start-ups have crossed the significant threshold of raising INR 200 crore or more.
- With 228 incubators and enabling organizations, Tamil Nadu leads the nation in support infrastructure.
These figures signal not just growth but also resilience and investor confidence in the state’s innovation climate.
Voices from the Launch
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT-Madras, called the dashboard a game-changer for policy formulation: “It allows us to focus on the sectoral strengths of each district and build targeted programmes. It also showcases our start-ups to global investors, including the Tamil diaspora and institutional funds, making Tamil Nadu more visible on the world stage.”
From the government’s side, Thiru T.R.B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotions and Commerce, framed the launch as a pivotal step in the state’s vision: “We are determined to position Tamil Nadu as a national leader in innovation and advanced manufacturing. Importantly, this growth will be inclusive, reaching every district and not just the metro hubs.”
Dr. Darez Ahamed, MD & CEO of Guidance Tamil Nadu, emphasized collaboration: “This platform is a catalyst. It allows industries, start-ups, R&D firms, and academic institutions to work together. By spotlighting local strengths, we are helping corporates integrate into ecosystems and investors identify promising opportunities.”
How the Platform Was Built
The conceptual foundation for INNOVATION-TN comes from CREST (Centre for Research on Start-ups and Risk Financing), an Institute of Eminence research centre at IIT-Madras. It was developed in partnership with YNOS Venture Engine, an IIT-M incubated start-up specializing in venture intelligence.
IIT Madras-Guidance Tamil Nadu-YNOS MoU signed on 23 July 2025, outlines the roles:
- IIT Madras: academic oversight, research insights, data reliability.
- Guidance Tamil Nadu: industry alignment, strategic promotion, policy support.
- YNOS: platform development and digital interface.
This tripartite model ensures that the dashboard is academically rigorous, practically useful, and technologically robust.
Why Investors Should Watch Closely
For investors, INNOVATION-TN represents a structured gateway into Tamil Nadu’s start-up scene. It brings clarity to a fast-growing but often fragmented landscape, making it easier to identify scalable ventures and sector-specific opportunities.
According to Prof. A. Thillai Rajan, Head of CREST, the platform simplifies discovery: “Start-ups can now quickly find the right incubators, investors, or banks—saving time and improving their odds of success.”
This means better deal flow for investors and more targeted support for entrepreneurs—a win-win scenario.
The Broader Implication
By launching INNOVATION-TN, Tamil Nadu is sending a clear message: it is not only the country’s second-largest industrial economy but also one of the most forward-looking states for innovation and entrepreneurship.
If the platform delivers on its promise, it could become a template for other states—showcasing how academic research, government policy, and private enterprise can converge to create sustainable, inclusive growth.

Conclusion
Tamil Nadu’s dashboard isn’t just a digital tool—it is a symbol of ambition. It marks a shift from fragmented innovation efforts toward a cohesive, state-wide strategy. With IIT-Madras anchoring the academic research, Guidance Tamil Nadu ensuring policy alignment, and investors being drawn to a transparent ecosystem, INNOVATION-TN could set a new benchmark for start-up governance in India.
